2024 Equitable Tech Summit
An Urgent Dialogue on Technology Ownership and Governance
Hosted by the Decentralization Research Center, the summit will bring regulators, policymakers, and industry experts together in Washington, D.C. to discuss ownership and governance of AI, Blockchain, Big Tech, and Social Media.
WASHINGTON, D.C. – May 21, 2024
The Decentralization Research Center (DRC) today announced the 2024 Equitable Tech Summit, a groundbreaking event dedicated to addressing the equitable ownership and governance of emerging technologies. Discussions will cover public policy and regulatory issues around artificial intelligence, antitrust in the technology industry, blockchain, and social media, and the importance of laying the groundwork for responsible governance. The summit will take place on Thursday, June 6th, from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C.
Hosted by the DRC in partnership with the Project Liberty Institute, the Blockchain Association, and Metagov, the summit will bring together leading academics, industry representatives, regulators, and policymakers, including a virtual appearance from Congressman Wiley Nickel.
Attendees will include experts from organizations such as the Harvard Berkman Klein Center, Stanford Law School, Stanford CodeX Center, ACLU, Cato Institute, Aspen Institute, Milken Institute, Wilson Center, Columbia University, New America, USAID, NCBA, Fight for the Future, Microsoft, and the Atlantic Council.
The summit will focus on four primary themes:
Artificial Intelligence
Addressing consumer protection and public policy issues surrounding AI, including the technology’s potential impact on democracy and the importance of advancing AI in a safe and equitable manner.
Big Tech and Antitrust
Aligning economic, regulatory, and social incentives of Big Tech to increase competition and protect consumers.
Blockchain
Exploring how blockchain systems can improve oversight, transparency, and governance, and serve as a tool for the safe and responsible development of AI.
Social Media
Utilizing emerging technologies to better regulate, govern, and decentralize the digital public square.
“In today’s rapidly evolving technological landscape, decisions made about ownership and governance will shape the trajectory of the next century,” said Connor Spelliscy, Founder and Executive Director of the DRC. “We aim to bring together a diverse group of stakeholders to ensure emerging technologies are developed in a way that promotes equitable ownership and decentralized control.”
The DRC is focused on fostering informed dialogue at a pivotal moment of technological advancement that holds the potential for profound societal impacts, but also risks concentrating power and wealth among the elite and destabilizing democracy.
The DRC’s previous summits have been co-hosted at, and in partnership with, leading academic institutions including at Harvard University, Stanford University, and the University of Tokyo, and have provided intimate forums for policymakers, regulators, academic, and industry leaders at the cutting edge of emerging technologies.
